EXPERIENCE MORE
The most popular wildlife parks and reserves in Ghana are the Mole National Park at Damongo (close to Tamale), where large herds of elephant, lion and other popular wildlife can be seen. Bia National Park in the Brong Ahafo region is equally interesting. Takoradi is the location of the Monkey Hill park (a natural reserve sitting right in the middle of a cosmopolitan city, and home to the mona species). Further west from Takoradi are the Nini Syhien and Ankasa National reserves, known for the fantastic abundance of insect life and the pigmy hippopotamus. The western region also has fascinating hideouts where you will find crocodiles. The Kakum Nature Park lies in the central region and is one of Ghana’s most recently-gazetted natural forested areas. It is a typical damp dense forest, home to a large number of insect and some minor wildlife species, with another equally-interesting attraction being the myriad of medicinal plants, trees and shrubs.
Aburi Gardens (in the eastern region) as this attraction is popularly known and called, is situated about 45 minutes’ drive from Accra. The elevated (and thus cool) location offers visitors an excellent break and relaxation from the heat, hustle and bustle of Accra.
The gardens were established in 1890 by the British authorities. They have lured visitors from around the world with the sweet fragrances, unbelievable colour and sheer beauty of the numerous floral species grown and nurtured here for over a century.Capital of the Ashanti Kingdom
Kumasi is the traditional capital of the Ashanti Kingdom, a famous territory with worldwide renown. Ashanti is popular for many reasons, chief among which is the bravado and wisdom of its past kings and royals who ruled many centuries ago and up to the present. Well-remembered among these ‘Asantehene’ (Akan word for ‘Asante Kings’) are Okomfo (Chief Fetish priest) Anokye and Osei Tutu. Ashanti rulers have proved to be a positive unifying force to their subjects, making their kingdom the envy of all neighbouring states. Kumasi is a five-hour drive from Accra and is home to a fine variety of attractions as it works in tandem with famous villages like Bonwire, Ntonso, Ejisu and Lake Bosomtwi.

Ghana’s 540km stretch of coastline is awash with so many different beaches it might be difficult to make the right choice. Depending on where you might be, you can swim from daybreak till dusk, and some beaches actually party all night long with bonfires, grilled meat sessions, drinks and all types of music and traditional dance with COCONUTS GALORE! Water sport is also available, and Ada along the east coast is the perfect venue for this.
JOURNEY INTO HISTORY
Built mainly for trade purposes in the early 15th century, these fortified structures currently have various different uses ranging from museums to offices. A good number have also been preserved over the centuries so as to maintain their original structure and state. The most popular of these structures are the Cape Coast and Elmina castles in the central region. These are known for the roles they played in the trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Ghana has the largest concentration of such historical structures in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa.
AKOSOMBO EXPERIENCE
Two hours’ drive from Accra is the town of Akosombo, site of Ghana’s foremost industrial project, the Akosombo dam and HEP station. This project has been the reason for the Volta Lake, an expansive mass of water which used to be the world’s largest artificial lake. It stretches all the way from the northern region (Buipe), southward to Ada along the coast. The Volta lake presents the opportunity for cruises from Akosombo to Dodi Island on entertainment ferries. Another type carrying cargo and passengers further up north offers passengers a fine experience as it stops at several ports en route.
BRUSH WITH THE FORERUNNERS
Countless numbers of the original sons and daughters of West Africa and other sub-regional parts were captured and ferried across the Atlantic ocean to America and the Caribbean between the 14th and 15th centuries to work as slaves on cotton and other plantations. The descendants of these slaves eventually recognized and today pay tribute to their forebears by visiting the countries which they believe are the source of their roots. One of such remembrance celebrations is the Pan African Festival (PANAFEST), which brings hundreds of diasporans to Ghana every four years. EMANCIPATION DAY celebrates the liberation of slaves, in an elaborate retreat that incorporates retracing the Slave Route, the trail used by the captured ancestors as they were driven in chains by their captors.
The EF tour package repertoire is arguably quite competitive, with exciting, adventuresome, educational and fulfilling itineraries covering history, culture, nature/environment, cuisine, music/dance, fashion, art and lots more and are spread thoughout all of Ghana’s 16 regions. Have a feel of the Great Outdoors atop the Kakum forest, where masses of flora are spread beneath you. The Canopy Walkway sets you 30 meters above the forest trees, amongst which hide several different species of fauna. The forest also teems with thousands of different insect types, all forming the basis of man’s existence through pollination and seed dispersal.
Explore NowThe famous Canopy Walkway (a raised, suspended narrow platform secured perfectly to some of the tallest trees) enables visitors to view the Kakum forest cover from several metres above the ground, and is another exciting reason to visit Ghana’s Central region. The park is swamped by hundreds of visitors on a good day. The Walkway is the only one of its kind in Africa.
